Delicious import, Google search integration, … – and a happy new year!

Here at useKit we almost missed the end of 2010 and suddenly Christmas was two days ahead. Until the 22nd of December we were running over the tasks of the last major release in 2010, adding a bunch of new features such as: Google Search integration, direct sharing of content or our new “one-click” clipping. And after the rumors that Yahoo would shut down delicious, we decided to drive our head developer nuts and added an import functionality for delicious bookmarks to the release. With a great effort of all our developers, we were able to release before Christmas and even had time for a small Christmas party.

It has been a very busy but also successful year for us and we would like to thank all our users, partners and friends for their help and feedbacks and to wish you all a happy new year. We are looking forward to a 2011 with a lot of improvements and new features to useKit and appreciate any feedback on how we do.

What’s new:

  • Import of personal delicious bookmarks.
  • Integration into Google Search page.
  • Send content to non useKit contacts.
1. Import of personal delicious bookmarks
Requests from users and the rumors around delicious led to the decision to expand our delicious integration with an import functionality.

We are proud how easy it is to import all your delicious bookmarks into useKit and even preserve the tags. It only takes three easy steps after being registered.

import from delicious

First, click the prominent “Import your bookmarks from Delicious” button. This leads you to the first part of the import dialogue.

Either select an already connected delicious account or enter your delicious or Yahoo account data and proceed to the next page.

Within useKit, content such as bookmarks is organized in Contexts. Select the Context where the imported bookmarks should go to or leave the default “Delicious”. You can change or add additional Contexts at any time after the import. The tags of your delicious bookmarks will be saved in the description and are thereby accessible via the useKit search. After Context selection, proceed to the final step:

After a successful import, you will see the following dialogue confirming the import and showing some statistics. You can now retrieve, organize and share your bookmarks or add new content. In addition, useKit recognizes the type of URL and content such as slideshares, youtube videos or doodle votes is directly shown. As an example visit Nicolas’ delicious bookmarks here.

2. Direct integration into Google Search
Our main purpose is to make the deposition and the retrieval of information as easy as possible. Benchmarking ourselves against these goals, we thought the retrieval of information is still not well integrated in the daily workflow and we asked our users what would help.
A first step is to incorporate useKit results into Google Search via our plugin. Since some people – including our designer – think their Google Search is holy, the feature can be disabled in your personal settings.

Please provide us with feedback on how you like our integration and what could improve your way of finding useKit content.

3. Send content to non useKit contacts

To allow the sharing of large files, web-clippings or any other content with non useKit users, we added what we call “one-to-one content”. A send button below every content item allows to send a single content item to any email address or useKit contact.

The recipient will receive a notification with a link to the content item. For reasons of security, the link is limited to three downloads. In a next step, we will include an optional password for the link. This function can be used to send large files to people with limited inboxes, for the fast exchange of information or for anything else.
